The NGO Committee on Migration is partnering with the Permanent Mission of Canada to the UN to co-sponsor an event in observance of International Migrants Day called “Immersive Media for Social Change.”
This initiative will spotlight the transformative potential of new media art and immersive technologies, and it will highlight how engaging with recreational platforms such as video games and VR/XR can strengthen community connectedness, cultivate meaningful relationships between people on the move and host communities, offer practical tools for successful integration, and foster deeper intercultural understanding.

The event will feature remarks from migrant and refugee video game artists, as well as representatives from civil society and multilateral institutions conducting research at the intersection of immersive media, gaming, and social impact. As a dynamic storytelling medium, immersive technologies can amplify the voices of people on the move, deepen understanding of their lived experiences, and promote inclusive practices that advance integration and social cohesion.
We hope that this will present Member States and civil society with innovative strategies to heal divisions, amplify the voices of people on the move, and drive meaningful change toward inclusive and cohesive societies.
Please join us on Tuesday, 16 December from 1:00pm-3:00pm (ET) for this panel event, followed by a light lunch. The event will be hybrid, held in-person at the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations (466 Lexington Avenue, 20th Floor, New York, NY 10017) and online via Zoom.
