We are pleased to celebrate the release of a new memoir by Eva Richter, one of the co-founders of the NGO Committee on Migration, titled Seeking Home: A World War II Refugee Childhood in War-Torn China.
Eva grew up as a refugee from Nazi Germany in Tianjin, China, where she lived through the turbulent years leading into the Second World War, the Japanese occupation, and the civil war that followed, until the Communist Revolution in 1949 when her family made the decision to migrate to the United States.
Although Eva maintains that her experience is not unique, her story represents a relatively unknown narrative of migration. And while this particular narrative is rarely told, it resonates on universal themes of the struggles of statelessness, identity, belonging, and the development of a moral compass that will inform Eva’s passion for migration advocacy and her life’s work.
Now, more than ever, it is essential to learn from the past and to transform the wisdom born from the experiences of people on the move into more informed and compassionate migration policies for all.
