This subcommittee was formed on 8 September 2016. Its focus will be tracking and advocating for a just, rights-based outcome of the upcoming negotiations to achieve a Global Compact on Migration and a Compact on Responsibility-Sharing for Refugees. These compacts were promised in the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, which was adopted by the Member States of the United Nations on 19 September 2016.
On behalf of the CoM, the Subcommittee, in consultation with the Executive Committee, prepared a statement in response to the invitation by the UN SRSG for International Migration, Ms Louise Arbour, for civil society input into the first thematic consultation on the Global Compact on Migration that will take place on 8 and 9 May in Geneva.
The CoM statement strongly endorsed the SRSG’s Issue Brief #1 (page 25-31) prepared for the thematic consultation, and urged the inclusion of several recommendations. The statement was circulated to all UN Permanent Missions, to the SRSG, through her office to numerous high-level UN officials, and to the CoM’s civil society partners worldwide.
