The World Humanitarian Summit Subcommittee was convened from 2015-2016 in the lead up to the first World Humanitarian Summit, which was held in May 2016 in Istanbul, Turkey. The group’s work was guided by the 5 year action plan formulated by Civil Society at the close of the 2013 High Level Dialogue on Migration and Development. The Subcommittee sought to mainstream the issue of migration and the rights of migrants into the humanitarian and development policies on which the Summit was focused. Their primary objective was to ensure an outcome to the Summit that would empower and protect migrants, refugees, and mixed populations on the move, especially those most vulnerable to violence in transit, such as women and children.
In addition to advocating for such an outcome in the months ahead of the Summit, the CoM also co-sponsored a side-event on its margins entitled Writing for Resilience: Writers’ Workshop with Young Syrians.
